Week Without Driving

Take the Week Without Driving PGH Pledge & advocate for better mobility options for non-drivers in Allegheny County!

Whether we live in suburban towns or city neighborhoods, everyone in Allegheny County deserves safe, reliable, dignified access to the places we need to go. Across the county, 30% of our friends and neighbors don’t drive a car. The Week Without Driving is a nationwide movement to link the needs of disabled individuals and people of all ages with environmental movements and accessible community planning. Together, we will illustrate challenges and opportunities for non-drivers and call for change that improves mobility for all.

Join us in pledging to take a Week Without Driving PGH. You can participate as an individual, organization, or elected official. Find out more and get involved at the Week Without Driving PGH website: https://weekwithoutdrivingpgh.org/

I am participating in a Week Without Driving to recommit to my own values, and support all of the awesome organizations who are mobilizing this effort. I am someone who already uses all kinds of mobility options on a regular basis like POGOH and PRT, but not having access to my car, even just for one week, is hard. There are certain trips that become difficult or incredibly time consuming to accomplish without the use of a car. Even getting to the grocery store requires a bus transfer, and the only bus in my neighborhood doesn’t even run on weekends.

I love that a Week Without Driving is bringing awareness to the 30% of people in Allegheny County who don’t have access to a car, and not only bring a level of empathy to their daily transportation struggles, but also bring us together to advocate for a better mobility future for Pittsburgh and for our region. I’m very proud that POGOH is a part of the solution, but we all need to work together to build mobility networks that work for everyone in our city regardless of their access to a personal vehicle. We all deserve safe, affordable, convenient transportation!

Sara

I’m challenging myself to a week without driving to experience Pittsburgh in new ways. I usually bike or drive, so this week I’m going to walk more and use the PRT bus. I found out today that I can get from my office in the Strip District to my home in Lincoln Lemington Belmar is less than 30 minutes! This is about as long as my bike ride or drive home. Who knows what other gems I will discover by traveling a bit differently this week.

I am an avid user of Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT). Living outside of the city, in Turtle Creek, commuting into the city can be a hassle if you’re driving a car. Mass transit combined with biking saves me time and I don’t have to bother with looking for parking.

I’ll be using POGOH bikes for the week as I don’t have a usable bike at the moment. I’m participating in Week Without Driving as I’ve been driving a lot more since graduating college last year. I want to challenge myself to be more intentional about my regular commute and to engage with my surroundings a little more by walking/biking instead of driving.

Bike, bus and walking are my primary modes of transportation because they’re cheap, healthy and more fun than driving in Pittsburgh. Living in the east end with good access to POGOH and the busway, it’s very easy for me to make this pledge!
